My WHY: Why Residential Structural Engineering? Part 2

Writer: Heather WethingtonHeather Wethington

In residential engineering, I am part of a process that goes beyond construction—it's about understanding the aspirations and needs of families. Whether it's expanding a home to accommodate a growing family or creating a space for aging parents, every project is deeply personal.

The end result isn't just about square footage; it's about fostering joy and enhancing quality of life.

Take, for example, a couple I recently worked with who had been living in a converted garage for a decade. Helping them realize their dream of a proper home brought immeasurable joy not just to them but to me as well.

It's these transformations that fuel my commitment to this profession.

Yet, beyond personal fulfillment, there's a deeper conviction driving my work—a belief that safe, dignified housing should be a fundamental human right. It's troubling to think that in a country as wealthy as ours, housing insecurity remains a pervasive issue.

Everyone deserves a safe place to call home, free from structural hazards, fire risks, leaks, or mold.

Residential engineering may not always be glamorous; it's often overshadowed by the allure of grand architectural designs. But for me, it's the heart of what makes communities thrive.

It's about safeguarding families and ensuring that every individual has access to secure housing—much like clean air and water, a basic necessity that should be universally attainable.

In advocating for safe living conditions, I believe we're not just building homes; we're cultivating stronger, healthier societies.

This is the driving force behind my work—the opportunity to bring joy, security, and dignity to individuals and families through thoughtful, purposeful engineering.

Join me in reimagining the role of residential engineering. Together, let's build a future where safe and sustainable housing is not a luxury but a fundamental human right.
